Learn about Apheresis
Apheresis also spelt Apheresis is a Greek word meaning "taking away". It is a medical technology in which the blood of a donor or patient is passed through an apparatus that separates out one particular constituent and returns the remainder to the circulation. It is an increasing common procedure, and allows more of one particular part of the blood to be collected than could be separated from a unit of whole blood. Apheresis is also performed to collect red blood cells, plasma (liquid part of the blood), and granulocytes (White blood cells).
The components which are separated by Apheresis include:
- Plasma (Plasmapheresis)
- Red Blood Cells (Erythroctapheresis)
- Platelets (Plateletspheresis)
- Leukocytes(Leukapheresis)
- Stem Cells i.e. circulating bone marrow cells used in bone marrow transplant
The same criteria is applied to the donor for Apheresis as for blood donation.
- Age: 18-60 years
- Weight: More than 50 Kgs
- Haemoglobin More than 12.5 gms%
- No history of major illness in last 2 years
